The first mention of Sant Pere Cercada dates back to 1603, when there was already a place of worship. Breda monastery opposed the conversion of Sant Pere Cercada into a monastery, and this impeded its construction and the establishment of the Augustinian community until 1136.
The new, romanesque church was built between the end of the XII century and the beginning of the XIII century, and it was consecrated in 1245. As of 1480, the community, now in decline, was managed by absent priors until 1592 when it became part of the Augustinian convent of Seu d’Urgell.
The church is a magnificent example of late romanesque architecture, with a Latin cross shaped floor, dome base and triple-apse front.
On the outside, the building has few ornamental elements, apart from the main Western façade, crumbling arches, where the capitals of nummulite stone from Girona stand out. The state of conservation of the temple, recently restored, is excellent. Only a few vestiges of the monastery annexes remain in the living quarters, currently inhabited, that are to the West of the church.
It is accessed by the forest trail that leaves the Sant Salvador Park towards Farners Castle and the Farners Hermitage. It can also be accessed on foot or mountain bike, via many routes and trails. It is part of the Trail of the 10 Hermitages.
Practical information: can be visited. The church will remain closed except for when mass is celebrated.
